Talent Management: a Few Important Issues

October 11th, 2009 at 8:25 pm (Markets, This & That)

A thriving business depends on good people management skills. These skills may be acquired and learned. It can be an advantage to have a innate affinity for people, but you can do numerous things to simplify the process.

Build relationships: Addressing individuals by name is a start. Encourage conversation; get eye contact when you are talking. Be respectful, also listen to the other person’s point of view, even if you disagree or have another point of view. Paying attention to everything others say is one of the best human resources management skills in your arsenal. Exhibit an interest in what everyone can contribute to the business.

Show integrity: Keeping your word is fundamental. When you don’t deliver on what you promise, the fragile bond of trust is fractured, and nobody will give you their best efforts without trust. Each time you make a statement or make a promise, do be sure you can follow through or don’t bother giving your word at all. The truth is, if you can’t be depended upon, they will not be committed when it’s really important.

Feedback is important: It’s a two-way street. Keeping an open mind regarding other’s views is very important in effective human resource management. If you are able to demonstrate that you are approachable and open, you show that other’s opinions matter to you, and they will value your thoughts. Supporting conversation also encourages fresh ways of doing business, ways of achieving the mission of the company, and improves the team dynamic. By allowing the employees some input, the project and its results becomes important to every member.

Encourage communication: People management techniques boil down to one thing — communication. Be accessible, practice listening skills, keep an open mind, and give team members an equal voice. Staff must be encouraged to communicate with one another as well as with you. The sharing of thoughts is crucial in the creative process, and in communicating with one another, it is simple to find issues before they become a problem, permitting corrective action to be put in place to prevent any further problems.

A little work is necessary, however the payoff is worthwhile. Through building the bonds of a good team and taking heed of your team’s opinions, a successful business will be accomplished.
