It is common knowledge that it is impossible to achieve the broadband speeds that are advertised by service providers. Therefore, the consumers find the idea of mobile broadband baseline speed dubious and untrustworthy.

In spite of consumers’ views, the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) declared 7.2 Mb to be the industry’s baseline speed. This declaration made this year is based on two facts. Firstly, 7.2 Mb or more is the best speed that is supported by a majority of the commercial HSPA networks in the world. Secondly, numerous mobile equipments support 7.2 Mb broadband speeds.

These findings have made a number of people in the sector think about what the next baseline speed would be. This resulted in the GSA starting a research project for getting information directly from insiders in the industry about what they expect to be the baseline in the future.

The research went on for seventy days and involved getting in touch with manufacturers, network operators and suppliers. Based on their replies, a report named ‘Mobile Broadband – The Next Baseline’ was released. According to the report, a large number of experts consider 21Mb as the next baseline speed that will be possible through HSPA+ in the near future.

There has been substantial debate featuring 21Mb as the predicted baseline speed for quite some time now. Further, few of the people who were interviewed also said that this baseline is more comprehensive and reflects many aspects other than just speed in bringing good user experience.
