For those of you who are looking for a holiday experience in a natural setting where you can appreciate the life around you, this list is for you. The next time you’re checking out cruise deals look for the following as options. Madagascar: The “Land that Time Forgot” has been featured in movies and even cartoons for decades now, and offers perhaps the most pristine eco-tour experience in the world. Over half of the world’s chameleons live on this island off the coast of South Africa and the indigenous wildlife is friendly and inquisitive, truly a special experience. Maldives Islands: Tropical paradise can also be a sanctuary for wildlife and a preserve for those who enjoy it. Spend some time at one of these island resorts and be pleasantly surprised at the naturalist attitudes of those who live and work there. You’ll notice the difference when you go back home and perhaps care a bit more about your surroundings than you did before you left. Acadia, New Brunswick: Ride along the St. Johns River to the place Longfellow wrote Evangeline about. The forest primeval is still there, relatively untouched but bordered by quaint fishing communities where you can stay. Make it a point while you’re there to visit one of the numerous Mikmaq reservations where the land has been preserved in its original state for hundreds of years. Samasati Nature Resort, Costa Rica: Built in the midst of 270 acres of virgin forest, this fabulous resort and retreat area offers a truly uplifting experience in a place where man is a respectful visitor. This entire resort was built with wood from reforestation plants in the north and no trees were disturbed in construction. The bungalows also overlook the Caribbean, a nice extra that completes the experience. Machu Picchu, Peru: The lost city of the Incas was recently voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the world. The breathtaking view from 2,430 metres above sea level combined with the surprisingly advanced architecture will blow you away. Designed to be a hideaway for the Incas from the Spaniards, Machu Picchu can be your eco-tour getaway spot. There are very few places on earth more beautiful than here.
