The Three Bet

In poker, the term “three-bet” refers to a raise made by a player in a No-limit game. Generally it is the first raise to come out and is three times the big blind bet. Some players confuse the term thinking it applies to the third person who bets. But it can be any player at the table, from the under the gun position through to the button who puts out a three-bet raise.

Traditionally, a three-bet was perceived as a strong bet meant to chase off the other players. A three-bet is mean to represent a strong hand. There are some players who always stick to three- bets and never vary their raises as a way to disguise their hands. The three-bet may mean they have a big hand or could be bluffing. The widespread popularity of poker online, especially online, has turned it into a more aggressive game than it was even just a decade ago. The three-bet has become a fairly standard raise in today’s game.

When you are up against three-bet players, you have to be alert to patterns. Does one player always three-bet? If so, it is hard to read what hand they are playing. Be sure to note if they bluff with it or not. Look for three-bet patterns by other players who use it sometimes since they may only employ it with strong hands or in late position. If you can recognize a pattern to other players’ three-bet tactics, then you can get a better read on their hand ranges. Remember this when you’re at the casino online.
