Three Rules for a Healthy Life

Three rules for a healthy life (plus a bonus tip).

In my nutrition practice, I constantly say that if there’s just one thing you are prepared to modify in your dietary habits, the most important thing you can do is to eat more vegetables and fruits. Fresh, uncooked is optimal, organic is better, and vegetables and fruits are organic locally grown is the ultimate. Thus if there’s a farmer’s market nearby, you will do well to get your produce there. I urge that you be bounteous about it. Buy more vegetables than you think you’ll consume.

Stock your cupboards and refrigerator with edible anti-oxidants. Have these on hand at all times and integrate them liberally in your diet. Some of these edible anti-oxidants are great alone as a simple treat. The family of these anti-oxidant foods have substantive nutritive benefits. As I often tell those I consult with, the anti-oxidant foods will literally add years to your life.

Another very important message is water. Have up to a gallon of water each day. Some of your daily alotment can be unsweetened herb tea but nothing artificially colored. For every single serving of alcohol (beer, wine, liquor) or cup of coffee, add an extra 8 oz of water to aid your kidneys. An occasional glass of wine is surely healthy, but know that it dehydrates your blood and by association your organ systems.

The bonus tip is to detox your body on a regular basis. Detoxing can be very easy and simple. I encourage you to learn how to detox and if you’ve never done it before, give it a try.
