US House Approves a Measure of Online Gambling

September 1st, 2010 at 10:00 am (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

In more great news about the further legalization of online poker, a U.S. House of Representatives panel voted on Wednesday to approve a measure that would seek to regulate many forms of online gambling, in an effort to overturn an existing law that bans the increasingly popular Internet-based online poker gambling, according to the Wall Street Journal. Lawmakers on the House Financial Services Committee voted 41-22 to approve the legislation, meaning it could be brought to the floor by House Democratic leadership. Democratic aides said the most likely path forward for the legislation would be its addition to a larger, must-pass bill later in the year, rather than bringing it to the House floor as a stand-alone measure. The bill aims to bring many of the online gaming websites onto U.S. soil and regulate them, rather than banning them outright. The main thrust of the legislation is aimed at legalizing online poker, which is rapidly growing, but other forms of gambling including bingo would also be allowed. Placing bets online at Everest Poker on professional sports leagues such as the National Football League and Major League Baseball still wouldn’t be allowed under the bill. Rep. Barney Frank (D., Mass.), chairman of the House panel, has championed the cause of legalizing online gambling. Frank has argued that while he’s not a personal fan of gambling, he doesn’t believe it’s the role of the government to prevent adults from engaging in it.

Playing the Maniac

July 8th, 2010 at 10:10 am (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

Playing the Maniac Loose Aggressive online poker table images are hard to play, and even harder to sustain if no one knows that’s how you play to begin with. So sometimes you have to lose a little to gain a lot. What this means for all you aspiring maniacs out there is that you have to know how the tight aggressive online poker players plays, showdown with him on a weaker hand, and still beat him, or at least let him know that he’s not going to have any idea what you may call him down with in the future. Take this recent hand from a self proclaimed loose-aggressive poker player Mark Seif. In the small blind Seif holds T-8 of diamonds. The action folded to the button. With blinds 50/100 the button raised to 350. He called and so did the big blind. At this point Seif recounts that his image may not have been clearly demonstrated yet, so he made the call with the marginal holding. The flop came T-9-5 rainbow, one diamond. Sief holds top pair, weak kicker and some backdoor draw potential. He wanted to check raise, but didn’t get to, as the big blind and button checked instead of the usual continuation bet. The turn came 9 of hearts. Two pairs, with and 8 kicker now for Seif. Seif bets out 700 with his two pair, weak kicker. The big blind fires back with a reraise to 2200. Button folds. Here’s where the understanding comes in, explains Seif. “If everyone is playing like they’re supposed to be playing, they should have something like Ace-Jack or King-Queen, maybe Ace-Ten.” Of course he could have a 9 in his hand, though that’s unlikely. While the Button may have been holding a 9, it’s unlikely that an early position player like the big blind would be playing something loose, with the exception of maybe A9 suited. And since the second nine hit, it’s even more unlikely that this was the big blind’s starting holding. Again, Seif calls. River comes 3 of spades. It’s really unlikely that the 3 of spades hit the big blind’s starting range, so again Seif checks, and the big blind bets out 2800, about pot. Seif makes the call, and he was dead on; the other player was holding KQ suited, and Seif raked the pot with his two pair. As part of his online poker strategy, he wants the other players to not be able to read his hands as they would be able to with a player playing standard ABC tight-aggressive poker. “…I’m playing this hand to show it. I gain value by paying to show it and get my image back to where I want it to be, which is goofier and looser than they’ve ever seen.”

The Best Casinos Have Real Addresses

May 27th, 2010 at 9:56 am (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

The Best Casinos Have Real Addresses In the constant search for a casino that fills my needs, I have come to the conclusion that the best casinos have real addresses. Now please don’t misunderstand me, I am not saying that the best poker casinos are brick and mortar poker online casinos. I am simply saying that somewhere behind the scenes at a good casino there is a real physical location. Preferably this location is located somewhere near where you live so that you know the rules under which it operates, but this is not always important. The benefits of a physical location are manifold, but let’s start with the basics. If there is a real address behind a online poker casino, whether it is online or not, you can be assured that you are not giving your money to a fly by night location. You know they are a legitimate reason for the simple fact that someone authorizes them to exist within their political borders. The second major perk of only using casinos with addresses is that it allows you to contact them if something goes wrong. I have spent far too long in endless phone holds and waiting for an email response to be satisfied with an online only support team. I want real help when I am in trouble, and for that the casino must have a real location.

Home Game Tip: Designate a Banker

April 2nd, 2010 at 12:15 pm (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

When it comes to home poker games, the little things can make a big difference. No where is that more apparent then when it comes time to turn cash into poker chips. In the casual home games that many of us grew up on, it was entirely plausible that each poker player was responsible for cashing in on their own. Inevitably, this led to chaos as everyone tried to access the bank at once. If you want to have a more successful adult poker home game, you need to designate a banker. The benefits of designating a banker are twofold. First, putting all of the responsibility on one person means that there will no inconsistenties in the final totals. The less hands that are reaching into the bank, the less opportunity there is for money to get misplaced along the way. Naming one persn as the banker is an easy way to make sure that your accounts balance at the end of the day. The second benefit of naming a banker is that it is more like a real casino game. This format may be more familiar to players that are used to playing in brick and mortar locations. Mimicking this style will give more authority to your casual home game.

Poker as Entertainment

February 16th, 2010 at 8:55 am (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

As a player who used to fund quite a bit of my life with my poker earnings, for me first and foremost poker has always been about the business aspect. Especially when you are playing for serious money, the successful player must first contextualize the game in this way in order to keep the books straight: it is much like playing the stock market, or investing in good prospects.

For many, though, beyond just the moneymaking aspect, poker is meant to be a form of entertainment. It should be fun, and though the money is very important, enjoying yourself in the midst of the game should be almost as much of a priority. Sure, some games will be a slog fest where you really have to grind, but if you don’t love the game, you’ll never make it through these in the long run.

For others still, the game is pure entertainment. The money, if they make it, is nice, but for these players they more enjoy the act of it, the action. Picking up on the weaknesses of these less serious stacks will often make you money, but getting so deep in the action of the game that you are no longer human is not quite a way anyone should want to play at the casino.

The Three Bet

February 3rd, 2010 at 10:03 am (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

In poker, the term “three-bet” refers to a raise made by a player in a No-limit game. Generally it is the first raise to come out and is three times the big blind bet. Some players confuse the term thinking it applies to the third person who bets. But it can be any player at the table, from the under the gun position through to the button who puts out a three-bet raise.

Traditionally, a three-bet was perceived as a strong bet meant to chase off the other players. A three-bet is mean to represent a strong hand. There are some players who always stick to three- bets and never vary their raises as a way to disguise their hands. The three-bet may mean they have a big hand or could be bluffing. The widespread popularity of poker online, especially online, has turned it into a more aggressive game than it was even just a decade ago. The three-bet has become a fairly standard raise in today’s game.

When you are up against three-bet players, you have to be alert to patterns. Does one player always three-bet? If so, it is hard to read what hand they are playing. Be sure to note if they bluff with it or not. Look for three-bet patterns by other players who use it sometimes since they may only employ it with strong hands or in late position. If you can recognize a pattern to other players’ three-bet tactics, then you can get a better read on their hand ranges. Remember this when you’re at the casino online.

Facing down Trouble

October 22nd, 2009 at 8:13 pm (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

You believe you are holding the best online poker hand when the flop comes out and hits your pockets, perhaps making two pairs or a set. Naturally you bet, knowing you are favored to win. Even if called, you know this will build a bigger pot that you are likely to scoop. Everything looks good, and then trouble shows up in the form of a card that changes the board texture, making it possible for another poker online hand to beat yours. Trouble cards are ones that make three to a flush on board, offer the possibility of a straight, or even pair the board. Now there’s a real possibility your poker online hand, which was winning on the flop, is now beat.

When a trouble card appears, it often instills fear in any remaining players who did not connect with it. If you are first to bet, then go ahead and bet your strong hand. Put out a value or probe bet to get information. If called, then you could be beat, but if you are holding two pair or trips, you always have the long shot possibility of hitting a full house.

A bet may convince your opponent that the trouble card has completed your hand too. If it goes to showdown, then recognize you might be beat. In these situations, you must recognize that you are knowingly take a risk with the bet. You have to be willing to risk a loss in poker sometimes. A trouble card could be as intimidating to any other players as it is to you.

Tell Me What You’re Thinking Pt One

September 18th, 2009 at 10:53 am (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

Today’s article will be a compilation of sorts; today we’re going to talk about some of the easiest to spot and most common tells in poker online, and we’re doing it in a top ten style list form. One: checking the online pokerhole cards twice. After a hand is dealt, everybody usually looks at their cards. But if you see an opponent looking again after the flop you can put your money on the fact that he or she is looking to see if they have the straight or flush draw. Two: Eye contact. Most poker players use eye contact in a counterintuitive way. If you’re getting stared down, it probably means your opponent doesn’t have a strong hand. If you’re getting lack of eye contact as if you’re opponent is trying to act weak, he probably has a strong hand. It’s natural in our psychology to do the opposite of what we normally would to try to confuse opponents, and really good players will use this to confuse opponents by switching their act doing either whether they’re weak or strong. Three: Lack of interest in a hand. If a player begins focusing on other things either preflop or in the middle of a hand, this is a scary player. There are pretty good chances he or she has a monster and is trying their best to hide it. Again, just think basic psychology, we try to act the opposite of what we really are when we try to deceive people. Four: Talking. You’ll have to watch a player a few times show down some hands to pick up on this tell, but it’s one of the strongest you’ll be able to find. Next time you’re watching a showdown, watch a player an see how much he talks. Then look at his cards. Do this a few times and you’ll be able to pick up on whether or not he talks more when he’s weak or when he’s strong, and you’ll be able to use this to your advantage if it ever comes down to you and him in a hand together. Again, this is one of those tells that takes some observance first to get a grasp on. Five: Stance. Pay attention to how a player is sitting or standing. If he is sitting back relaxed, chances are he has a good hand. If he’s leaning forward with interest in the next card, he probably doesn’t. But again be warned, this is another trick that a lot of experienced players will use to confuse. They will vary their stance regardless of whether they’re weak or strong.

Tilted State of Mind

June 18th, 2009 at 9:04 am (Gambling Fortunes, Having Fun, World Of Games)

Try to figure out what state of mind your poker opponents are in at the casino-if you can make an accurate guess of what’s going on in a player’s head when she acts, you are one step closer to winning the pot (or making a smart fold). Knowing when a player is on tilt is such a huge advantage when you play poker. Tilting players seem to have a tendency to place bets on hands that are much less than premium. Tilting can make the best poker player as reckless as a drunk first-timer, and once you see it, be sure to take advantage. Keep an eye on an opponent after he gets hit with a tough loss. A bad beat or a great hand beaten by an even better hand are both warning signs that a player might be ready to tilt. Keep an eye out for an “I’m due for some good luck” attitude or an angry toss of chips into a pot, all great indicators of a tilting player. When you’ve identified a player on tilt, count on them putting all their proverbial eggs into a mediocre hand, like a face card with a low kicker or a low pocket pair. If you can beat a mediocre hand, it’s a good idea to play against a mediocre player.
